SAN DIEGO, Calif. July 20 - It's actually happening... World of Warcraft the movie will begin production in 2014 and hit theaters in 2016 director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) announced at Comic-Con today. Announced back in 2006, the movie adaptation of the most popular MMO to ever grace human history seemed like it would never see the light of day. Coming from the movie studio that brought fans Man of Steel, 300, and Nolan's Batman movies, Legendary Pictures and originally attached to Spider-Man director Sam Raimi, the film looked like it had promise. Unfortunately, according to Raimi, Blizzard "mismanaged" the film, causing the veteran director to abandon the project.
Well Legendary Pictures still wants the film to happen and Warner Bros. is willing to throw more than $100m into the project to do so, reported Gamespot. Granted the MMO has over 8 million players subscribed to it the movie should have promising results, at least in terms of commercial success. I myself, an ex-WoW player will never return to the MMO again, but I do love the IP's lore and will likely watch the film opening night.
