KIRKLAND, Wa. August 5 - Ex developers from Monolith who worked on projects Shogo: Mobile Armour Division, No One Lives Forever, and F.E.A.R are working on an eerie first-person PC title set in 17th century colonial Virginia titled Betrayer.
Development studio Blackpowder Games selected the time period for a very particular reason, one that was inspired by the disappearance of Roanoke colony. "The social situation of that time was really interesting," explained creative lead Craig Hubbard. “I don’t know if you’ve read about what it was like to be in the Pilgrim colonies, like if you broke the law, but they’d like… pile stones on you until you died. It was just brutal and horrific and that’s great subject matter for an atmospheric and eerie game.”
The game's protagonist will arrive in Virginia to find a colony filled with ghosts and monsters. The game will have puzzle elements as the player discovers what exactly is going on in the mysterious setting.
"Clue by clue, you must piece together the story of what befell this doomed settlement and find a way to set things right," explains the game's official website. "You will be hunted by corrupted Conquistadors and ravening shadows as you explore an expansive wilderness in order to trace the brief, tragic history of the colony and search for survivors."
An early access version of the game will be released on August 14 via Steam.
