Apparently The Dark Below is referenced in a source book for Warcraft called, Manual of Monsters. "The Dark Below is a place inhabited by demons, devils and infernal creatures, from where some sorcerers take their power directly and sometimes have a patron beast to foster their magic," it reads. Another possibility is a Diablo 3 expansion or a new IP.
Blizzard will be hosting a press conference at Gamescom in Germany next week and has promised that the studio has something in store that will "capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells and the shadowed places that lie between".
Each of WoW's expansions have revitalized interest in the series, but the popular MMO hasn't been looking a little less popular of late. According to Activision's latest quarterly report, WoW has roughly 7.7m subscribers, down from the previously announced 8.3m. As history has a tendency of repeating itself, if The Dark Below is in fact the next World of Warcraft expansion, subscribership will see a boom upon release before tapering off with a slow, but steady decline. The problem, I posit, is that however much we all love the familiar, fans are now anxiously awaiting something new.
